Well, as you can see the Yukon River broke up this week. I have been looking forward to this for at least a month, and we've been expecting it to happen for the past week. Some friends called and gave us a heads up and it was perfect timing. We had just eaten an early dinner so we could be outside to stack wood. That plan went out the window as we piled into 'Clark' and headed to the river. Yes, it was amazing. Yes, it was cool. Yes, you should have been here to see and hear and feel it! That's right. This pic above was taken at 'the pilings' and the ground we were on shook when the huge pieces of ice bumped into the bank. We stood and watched for quite some time. Some of the ice was still 4 feet thick.
See the boulder size pieces of ice that got jammed up on the left side? It was so cool to see them be moved around like little pebbles. My friends and family in the south, I would relate the sound of the river moving to a straw being swirled around in a slushie from Sonic, only magnified times 100 or so.
Another view of break up from another area of town. In the middle of the river you can see heaps of ice piled up. It almost looks like a miniature mountain range.
While driving around in Old Town (the part of town that's close to the river and not where we live) we saw this rabbit sitting in someone's front yard like a pet. His coloring is changing from white to brown with the changing of the season. This one only has white left on his feet and underside.
Another part of spring is chopping and stacking wood. Its a family chore. Chris does the chopping while I help the kids stack.
Jason, Chris' brother, invited us to school to see the chickens his class was hatching. It was fun for the kids to observe this up close. They learned about how the chickens peck their egg open during hatching with a special egg tooth on the tip of their beak. They saw a couple of eggs at different stages of hatching still in the incubator. They also got to get their hands on some egg shells after the hatching was complete. It was quite an exciting time. Once Cara realized they were real, she kept saying, "ooohhh. ooohh."
We've been taking lots of walks. Cara asks to go outside a lot by saying "tide. tide." or she brings me her shoes or she asks to get in the backpack. As you can see there are a few random places that still have a touch of snow.
Preston made green rice crispie treats and we sat out on our deck after dinner to eat them.
Cara recently had a growth spurt and in the process lost much of her chubbier baby look, taking on a leaner toddler look. She weighs 22 lb. 11 oz. and is 32 inches tall.

Awesome post. Cara looks huge compared to when I last saw her. Chris would have a much easier time splitting wood if he were in plaid flannel...
Cara is growing soooo fast. Really good pictures of her and the boys. Really like the one of you and Cara going for a walk. Can't wait to see you guys.
